CHAPTER 16

Meghan stopped by her room long enough to shower and change into a blue jean skirt and lime green top. She added bangles to her wrist and several different necklaces to her neck. Then, she sprayed a little Exclamation perfume behind her ears and applied mascara to her lashes as her hair air-dried. Her parents were still out, probably already at dinner. She pulled on her Doc Martens because she had no idea where she and John would end up tonight. She ran her fingers through her waves and spritzed a little hairspray to keep everything in place.

She glanced at her reflection. She could see the nervousness in her own eyes. She felt grown-up enough to move to California on her own. So why was she so nervous about hanging out with John and his friends?

Maybe it was because she’d never had a summer romance with an older guy. She’d mostly dated guys she met in high school around her age. They seemed tame and safe compared to this college guy. She grinned at her reflection as giddiness bubbled up inside her.

Meghan was out of high school, though, and she needed to remember that. The people in L.A. would chew her up and spit her out if she walked around like a scared child. Chin up, girl, she said to herself. Meghan believed that anything was possible if she met new challenges with confidence. If she didn’t let people see her fear, they’d never know it was there. Life is acting, most of the time, she thought.

Flirting with John all week was finally paying off. From the first glance he’d given her with those blue eyes of his, she knew she needed to get to know him better, even if it was only for a short time, which just meant that she’d have to move a little faster than she was accustomed to. She’d already wasted three days of her vacation pining away for this guy.

Meghan wrote her parents a quick note, grabbed her room key, and left.

Her stomach fluttered as she walked down to the pier to meet John. A wide grin spread across her face when she saw him leaning against a post, his arms crossed over his chest. She couldn’t help remembering how his bare chest had glistened in the sunlight after his swim. He’d looked like a Greek god sitting on that ledge with the waterfall streaming down behind him. She thought it was probably an image she’d never forget.

She kicked herself for not trying to kiss him. She’d had a moment of shyness that overwhelmed her. She figured he was too much of an upstanding guy to make the first move on her. She remembered him staring at her lips for a few moments, though, and her heart pounded a mile a minute as she realized he was thinking about kissing her. That’d given her the confidence to finally ask him to take her out tonight.

She’d have to apologize to her dad for saying she thought this would be a crummy vacation.
